ARTISTIC PROCESS
Richard James is a fine-art photographer and printmaker. Embracing a digital process from beginning to end, Richard uses Canon digital photographic equipment to capture his images. During the image capture process he typically photographs each subject many times, using a variety of angles, focal lengths, and compositions.
Richard digitally processes the images using Adobe Photoshop CS on a Macintosh platform. Each RAW format image is processed at 16 bit/360 megabytes to preserve all detail. A calibrated workflow environment includes: camera, monitor, and custom printer profiles for accurate color reproduction.
HOW THE GICLEE EDITIONS ARE MADE
Striving to stay true to his artistic vision, Richard fine-tunes each edition adding and subtracting elements to create an exceptional photographic print. The final Giclée editions are printed on the Epson Stylus Pro 4000 equipped with Epson Archival Ultrachrome Inks. Substrates include: Epson Premium Luster Photographic paper, William Turner textured fine-art watercolor paper, and canvas. The print is attached with archival hinges to acid-free 8 ply archival-quality Bainbridge mat board. The final print is inspected signed and numbered.
GICLEE PRINT LIFE
The typical lifetime of a Giclée color print is approaching 90 years. Since Giclée printmaking is a relatively new blend of art and science, common sense must prevail. We recommend that first and foremost the print be framed under glass. Secondly, we strongly suggest that the placement of the artwork, like any artwork, not be in the path of direct sunlight.
HOW THE SILVER GELATIN EDITIONS ARE MADE
With a nod to traditionally processed photographic images, Richard James Photographic Editions is pleased to offer digital Silver Gelatin prints. A marriage of traditional techniques updated with digital technology whereby digital images are projected on to photographic paper through a specially fitted enlarger and processed as in the past with chemicals.
Silver gelatin prints are made with fiber-based paper and are hand-toned. Most are split-toned which involves a combination of sepia bleach, sepia toner and either selenium toner or gold toner. The toning process adds a variety of warmer hues to the cold range of grays yielded conventionally. This process unquestionably yields the finest black & white prints available today.
SILVER GELATIN EDITIONS PRINT LIFE
Silver Gelatin prints on fiber-based papers are rated at 125 years. We recommend that first and foremost the print be framed under glass. Secondly, we strongly suggest that the placement of the artwork, like any artwork, not be in the path of direct sunlight.
