Donavan leaned back into the shadow on the wall and slid down to the floor. He had never seen so many people, never heard so many voices, and he had never stood in so many lines. So this is America! The brilliant light shining through the glass wall into Donavan's shadow made him shield his eyes and look away. He had gotten used to the darkness in the steerage, on his journey. Now he must step through the door into that light. His whole family longed for this moment and only he would go. He held all of their dreams. He was so afraid. The door opened. Donavan stood and walked out, into America.
